BIBAL Press

BIBAL Press was established as the publishing agency of BIBAL Corporation in 1986 in Berkeley, California, for the purpose of encouraging the study of biblical archaeology and literature.

The institute was founded over the kitchen table of Professor Duane L. Christensen, an internationally recognized Old Testament scholar who at the time (he is now in active retirement) was teaching at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and who remains the president of BIBAL Corporation.

For several years, BIBAL Press has published two or three books a year andhas been engaged in a variety of other activities, including biblical language training, archaeological excavations at Tel Dor in Israel, archaeological tours, Christian lay leadership training, and publication. The institute is non-sectarian and consciously ecumenical.

In 1995, BIBAL Press moved its operations to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and in 1997, it became an imprint of D. & F. Scott Publishing, Inc., a commercial corporation incorporated in the state of Texas:

Although BIBAL Press is now a for-profit corporation, it remains committed to the press's original goals of making available to the scholarly and lay communities attractive, useful, and affordable works in the field of religion, including worthy works by young scholars and deserving clergy. A portion of the proceeds from sales continues to support the non-profit work of BIBAL Corporation.

BIBAL's authors include some of the world's leading scholars in biblical studies and religion— names like Norbert Lohfink, Schökel, and Braulik.

We have a particularly good selection of works discussing the impact of the Dead Sea Scrolls on biblical scholarship and on modern religious issues.

We do our best to ensure that our books represents the very highest scholarship.

We are not associated with any religious denomination, nor do we censor our books for conformity to any particular theological position. The works we publish cover the gamut of the theological spectrum.

BIBAL Logo

The BIBAL Press logo depicts an Assyrian cherub and is intended to call to mind our special interest in the study of biblical archaeology and literature in the service of both Jewish and Christian communities. Cherubim (the plural of cherub) were important symbols in ancient Israel and were also prominent in the art of the early Christian church. Our cherub is an artist's conception, based on an ivory inlay of the eighth or ninth century BCE, which was probably once at home in the residence of an Assyrian governor.
